Bits and Pieces of My Life

Hello friends!
Inspired by Bleubird Vintage here are some bits and pieces of the last few days. The first picture is from my town's very own Fashion's Night Out. I was wearing my new Jack BB Dakota Swan dress. It was such an amazing night at the boutique I work at. We had models in the windows, a photographer taking pictures, mini make-up makeovers and appetizers and drinks. Not to mention 20% off everything. So fun! After I got out I went and enjoyed the other businesses own events happening downtown with my friend Brooke. Picture two is me and my niece on Friday. She is getting so big. I heart her. The next two pictures are just some of the fun we had later that night at the 2011 South End Art Hop. We enjoyed a set at our friend Creston's studio of our friend Ryan Ober's music. Not too mention we got to admire Creston's amazing guitars. Later we went to a photo studio for the exhibit and party. I may or may not have a started the dance party. Just saying. Finally the last four pictures are from today. I'm wearing my new to me thrifted handmade dress and a necklace gifted to me by a friend recently. Tonight my sweetie was inspired to make us tofu ravioli with pesto kale sauce and fried eggplant. It was so good! Hope you are having a great weekend so far too!

Hi all!
Can't believe it's been almost another month since my last post but I've been enjoying the summer and trying to take advantage of every free moment to be outside and away from the computer. That being said I'm still addicted to Instagram and so here is another round of photos from the last few weeks in no particular order. All were taken by me except the one in the vintage dress with the cat in the background that David took last night for our date to go to our friend Myra Flynn's cd release party. You may recognize the dress from this post back in March when I picked it up at my friend's shop. The picture of me wearing a feather fascinator was taken at her shop The Clothing Line. I didn't buy it but I'm thinking of going back and seeing if it's still there. It's so pretty! Also from her story is the vintage tulip skirt that I took a picture of in the mirror. High waist-ed in and so cute. Thanks Heather!
Well I have the day off and going to take advantage of the beautiful weather before heading out to meet the ladies tonight for a hen party! Have a great weekend!

Happy Sunday all!
I'm on day two of a three day weekend which was badly needed. I've been feeling a bit run down so I'm enjoying the long weekend and the amazing sunny weather. Here are some pictures taken on my iphone of the weekend starting on Friday with drinks after work and late night American Flatbread. Yesterday afternoon we went to a barbecue and pool party hosted by David's co-worker. Last night we went to friend's house for a small last minute dinner party where I decided it called for a glass of prosecco. Today we are taking it easy until later when we are having friend's over for dinner. Excited to be using all the vegetables we picked up from our farm share this week. The last picture is from today at home with my cat. Her name is Squrrrl, no joke. Like Riot Grrrl. Hope your weekend is going well! xo, Littlest

Hi all!
It's been awhile. In part I'll blame my computer for not working regularly and then finally dying but really a big part is summer is here so I'm not online as much. I'm using another computer for now which is okay but I think until mine is fixed you'll see post only here and there. Anyhow I hope your summer has been great so far. I know mine has!

Back from Tour and Videos to Show!

Hey everyone!
Well we made it back from tour Monday and my computer stopped working right before I left but now seems ok. I think something is up with the battery so I should probably get it checked out however here is a quick post. We had a great time on tour and I can't wait to do a few updates over the weekend but for now I'm going to leave you some videos of some of the songs we played at San Francisco Popfest. This was a great night and I had blast. I hope I didn't embarrass myself too much seeing along on stage but I can't help it sometimes. Our friend Claude Cardenas shot the videos and did an awesome job. I love that he shot in black and white. You can watch all four videos online here too. Well I'm off to spend time with my mother , sister and niece who was born a month ago! Have a great day and check back for more post about tour this weekend. Three Imaginary Girls Talk About Our Seattle Show

One of my good friends moved to Seattle in the last couple of months and I'm really looking forward to seeing her and playing here. Seattle's very own one-night popfest: The Smittens, Math & Physics Club, The Special Places, Monnone Alone {ex-Lucksmiths}
The best thing about the San Francisco PopFest, besides the fabulous line-up gathered in one city over five consecutive days for the massive delight of p-fest attendees, is fact that all of those PopFest bands sometimes spread their west coast wings and, in the most wonderful of cases, travel north to visit us in Seattle.

On Friday, June 3 at the Rendezvous we have just such a migration from SF as two Seattle (and imaginary favorite) bands share a bill with two indie-popolicious artists from far away to make my one-night-mini-popfest dreams come true.

Opening the night is Monnone Alone, a band consisting of the most charming Lucksmiths' bassist of all time, Mark Monnone {and, sometimes, a couple very talented friends}. There has been a hole in our heart since the Lucksmiths called it quits (or how we like to remember it, put a hiccup in our happiness by hitting the 'pause' button), and here comes Monnone Alone to the rescue.

Next up is Seattle's Special Places, a duo consisting of Jenny Mears and Corianton Hale from Tullycraft. They just put the finishing touches on their first ever release and, fingers crossed, we will be able to pick up the EP at the show (maybe?). Perhaps they will include an acoustic cover of "Enter Sandman" in their set? Would any one-night-mini-popfest be complete *without* an acoustic cover of "Enter Sandman?"

Keeping the hometown vibe going will be Math & Physics Club. This is their last Seattle show before they head off to the great island across the pond to play IndieTracks (we've talked about how it's our dream to go to IndieTracks, right?) and a UK tour. It's so neat to think that Seattle's very own MaPC are going to play stages in Manchester, Glasgow , and London! Let's all pat their backs and wish them well on their big trip.

Rounding out the night, Vermont's The Smittens will take the stage and fill the room with sweet pop melodies about love, friendship, and gumdrops. I don't think they've never played Seattle, so this is our first ever chance to scream for "something sassy" at the top of our lungs.

Sounds like one pop-mazing, pop-tastic, pop-ilicious, pop-derful night right?!!?

Sophie!

Hello All!
Our niece Sophie was born this weekend. We are beyond happy to finally meet her. She is so precious. Here is my sister in the hospital. I couldn't believe how strong and full of energy she was just less then a day after labor. She is a super star. That's my brother looking like a proud Uncle. Oh and of course me the proud aunt. I took so many pictures of just Sophie but didn't want to over load this post. I can't wait to spend more time with her and get to know her better.

Last month The Smittens did a photo shoot for some new press kit pictures with Sam Simon. We're very pleased with the way they turned out we may use some for other projects too! Here are a few including an out take of Max and I.

Easter and Kiwis

Hi all,
Hope you all had a great weekend and Easter holiday if you celebrated. We had a great time with family in MA. Though it was short it was sweet. Our nephew who is just 4 months has grown so much since we last saw him at Christmas. He is 18 pounds now! A big boy indeed and super cute. I forgot my camera for the trip but took a some pictures on my phone. I totally forgot to get pictures with the my sister and brother-in-law but of course took a bunch of our nephew Nico. The top picture shows the bunny making napkin duties I full filled. I think they came out quite nice if I do say so myself. David also helped make some. There were eleven dinner guest not including two babies. My brother in law out did himself as always with the cooking. It was delicious! The dessert was baklava with fresh yogurt too. So good.

Also if you read my last post you know of the Easter Kiwi tradition. This year we were tight on time so we did just a few. Below are most of them. You know Black Swan Kiwi of course was done. We also had to do the Kennedys because we just watched the mini series and not only is David obsessed with all things Kennedy. Then of course the upcoming royal wedding. Lastly we couldn't not do Charlie Sheen. I mean that one is obvious. I'm off to get some shut eye but I'll be posting again tomorrow with our band's tour dates and a sneak peak at our photo shoot pictures taken last week.

Happy Earth Day Everyone!

Sorry it's been a bit since my last post. It was a busy week for the band with recording and a photo shoot. We just received the pictures today and will be picking out ones to update our press photos.

Today I took advantage of the lovely sunny weather and got myself up early for a long walk around town. It's so nice to have today off! The afternoon has been spent cleaning and napping. Later tonight I'll be going to this happening. Can't wait to dance with my friends and hear the new album!

David and I have plans to see family in Massachusetts for Easter. I'm excited for some Easter Kiwi making! What is Easter Kiwi do you ask? Well back years ago before I even knew David he had decided to become a vegetarian. His sister thought that he had become vegan and decided that instead of bringing over eggs one Easter to decorate she would bring kiwi. Even though David made it clear after he was fine with eggs they still kept the Easter Kiwi tradition alive. So every year kiwi are decorated so to speak. One can decorate however they want but we often draw from that's years current events, top news stories, pop culture, hit movies etc. I think the pictures below from previous different years will explain it better. Two of my favorite I have ever done were Flight of the Conchords kiwi and Brokeback kiwi. I also wanted to share some pictures from last Easter in MA at David's aunts house in the backyard with all the trees blossoming. The black and white picture of his aunt in college is amazing! So cute right?! If you celebrate Easter have a great one!

We Dance To The Beat

Hey all!
Hope the rest of your weekend was great and that this week so far has been fantastic as well. Things are great here in VT though rainy. Boo! Oh well at least it's not snowing. I'm actually a big fan of thunderstorms but it's just been rainy more then anything. I had Monday off and walked around town early morning before the rain showers came down abruptly just as I turned on to my street. I spent the afternoon cleaning around home and listening to Jens Lekman with the windows open. God I love him!

Speaking of music, I meant to back in late February to post pictures and a video from the Robyn show I and some friends attended at Higher Ground. It was so amazing! We danced like crazy. I can never get enough dancing in.

My band mate and friend Max will be here tomorrow from England! We are having a dance party Friday night with friends in one of the private rooms at a local bar downtown. I'm looking forward to seeing him and dancing with everyone.

Okey dokey friends I'm off to watch a movie before bed. Good night!

Sunny Spring Day and Outfit Post

Hello all,
Today was a beautiful Spring day here. As is typical this time of year I was dressed in light layers to make sure I was never too cold or too warm. David and I slept in and then left the house to take a long walk. We started off in our neighborhood where we got coffee and free local bread samples at the local bakery. We then did some browsing at The Barge Canal and then walked up the street to downtown where we got bagel sandwiches to go. Then we decided to walk to the Waterfront and then along the bike path. It was such a pretty walk along the lake and the fresh air felt so good. Eventually we got off the path and looped around to walk back home.

Later in the afternoon we met up with friends for a beer outside at Farmhouse on the patio. It's such a treat to finally be able to sit outside with a drink or food and people watch and just hang out with friends. Not having a million layers of winter clothing and accessories feels so good. I'm planning to start cleaning out my winter wardrobe this week and switching in more spring/summer clothes. Speaking of outfits I thought I would share some pictures of what I wore today. Now I'm off to take it easy with David tonight and watch this! We are super excited. Have a great night!

The Clothing Line

Hello there!
I just got back home a little while ago from running some early morning errands with my sweetie downtown. On our way back home we couldn't help but stop to say hello to our friend Heather who owns a consignment/new items store called The Clothing Line. Currently she has no facebook page or website but I think they may be in the works. Anyhow she has a great selection of old and new items. Including but not limited to clothing, accessories, gifts and jewelry. Also men's clothing guys! A few weeks back at her store I came across a lovely vintage 60's sleeveless dress with large blue roses on it. Lucky for me it fit perfect and I plan to wear it to an upcoming Spring wedding. Well as it would be today I scored another dress from her shop in the same style which is pictured below. I love it so much and can't wait to wear it as soon as this weather warms up! Thanks Heather for being one of my favorite shops in town! So if you live local or even if you don't and want to make the trip to her shop it is well worth it. Snow Day!

Hi all,
So today I had the day off and thankfully so. It has been snowing since yesterday and finally slowed down this afternoon. The storm is the 5th biggest in Vermont history. I was planning to get some things done at home today which I did but I couldn't resist an adventure to walk in to town while it wasn't snowing and get myself a hot chocolate at a favorite locally owned coffee shop. Which by the way was one of the few places open and hopping with business. All the retail businesses were closed and Church Street was oh so quiet except for the occasional sleds or cross countries skiers. I took a few pictures on my street and on my porch. The second picture is looking down my front stairs from the porch. The snow was so high before it got shoveled! The walk into town took a bit longer as the sidewalks were not plowed and unwalkable so the road it was. Despite so much snow it was pretty "warm" out and with all my layers I was toasty and enjoyed the exercise. So much snow also meant sunglasses. So bright out! I hope you all had a good Monday!

Our Annual Oscar Party 2011

Hi all!
Well it's been another while since my last post. David and I had our annual Oscar Party last Sunday and I have to say this may have been the best one yet. A great turn out! Everyone looked amazing. This year we hosted the Oscar party at Parima in their Lounge room which was cozy and the perfect spot. We had fun decorating the room beforehand but the space it self didn't require much prepping. The room already had a projector and screen set up so we could air the Oscars loud and large. Our guests got all dolled up as is a requirement for the Oscars and they did not disappoint. I had set up a red carpet and was taking pictures of guest as they arrived. Pretty soon it was getting so crowded I couldn't get red carpet shots anymore. A sign of a good turn out for sure.

I was pleased with most of the awards although I was kind of surprised The King's Speech won. Not because it wasn't a good movie or that I didn't enjoy it. I just thought of the other films I saw like The Fighter or Winter's Bone or even Black Swan would win. I thought Winter's Bone was so powerful and real. The Fighter well acted and interesting. Black Swan visually moving and well done although not my favorite. That being said Natalie Portman did some of her best acting I think and I'm happy she won.

Here are just some of the many pictures I took that night. Also our friends James Kochalka and Amy King came with their boys. James wrote about the party in his daily strip American Elf. Thanks James! Thanks again to all our friends who got all dressed up and came out to the Oscars! We had a great time and look forward to next year!

Happy Friday!
Today I had the day off. Took a yoga class at 9am. Got brunch with Max and then we went to a local thrift shop and found some bargains. I spent a whole $2.00 and got two sweaters, a winter hat, a necklace and a baby romper for my sister's baby. Came back home and did some blog reading and then took a well needed nap. Not a bad day at all so far! Now I'm off to meet my lovely friend Brooke for a drink. After we part ways I'm having a date night with David. New Year, New Goals

Hey all!
Once again more then a week has gone by! Well things are well here if not super busy! The Smittens have been practicing and recording since last Tuesday almost every day. We had show on Friday night which was a blast and right away the next day began recording some new songs for our upcoming album. We are super excited to get this album out in the spring or summer. Check back here or on The Smittens website. We are also planning to tour in the spring here in the states, fingers crossed! It's been great touring abroad for the last few years but we are due for another U.S. tour I think.On a personal level I'm working on some projects to make this blog better including a new layout and some more regular fashion, culture and local art scene posts. Or anything that strikes my fancy! I'm looking forward to the weekend. David and I have a romantic date night for Friday and then Saturday night we are going to this show with friends. Should be a fun and busy weekend. Oh and let's not forget our good friends Alison and Andy are coming over Sunday night for dinner and to watch The Golden Globes. We just love our award shows! Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone!
David and I had a nice New Year's Eve with good friends. We got all dolled up and went to A Single Pebble with friends. The food was very good but my drink was amazing. A ginger martini equals yum. See photo. Afterwards we went to a couple of mellow parties. All in all a good night. Today it is crazy warm here in Vermont. In the low 50's. I took advantage of the weather and put on my vintage hounds tooth cape and a vintage bright red sweater dress. David and I walked downtown to get lunch and were stopped by a lady who said we looked like old souls. I'm betting it had to do with our vintage outfits for sure. It was very sweet. I'm off to enjoy the rest of this day by watching a couple of movies and doing a whole lot of nothing. Hope you all are enjoying your days as well. Cheers to 2011! xoxo, Littlest

Hope you all have had a great holiday! David and I went to MA to spend Christmas with family. One highlight spending time with our new nephew Nicholas or for short Nico. He is the cutest! As per usual David spoiled me with some very thoughtful gifts including a vintage fox fur jacket. Can't wait to wear it with my New Years eve outfit! We are driving home as I type this update and I'm looking forward to being home soon. I missed our cat so much even though it was only two nights. Have a great week all!

Nicholas James Luker

Getting Off The Ground: Dance-Art-In-Progress

Just wanted to let you all know about two work-in-progress showing this coming week at the Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts. Lida Winfield is a long time friend and fellow dancer that I have had the pleasure of working with. She is a skilled performer and very talented. If you are in the area or can travel to this show I strongly recommend attending as I know it will be great.

Two shows: One on December 16th and one on December 18th both at 7pm. Dance Artists Lida Winfield and Ellen Smith Ahern are collaborating – come celebrate and be a part of their new work! They will perform an hour-long duet composed of both improvised and set material. Generated from images of moving water, hawks, deer, and people in the map of an imaginary landscape, the duet is full of humor, awkward grace, aggression and tenderness.
Following the performance, please join us for a reception and introduction to their 2011 project, Getting off the Ground, which involves making and sharing work, teaching, and fund raising for sustainable artistry.

Hi all!
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I know I've been quiet with the post updates but sometimes life just gets busy and there is not much time for such things. Today it snowed. The first real snow of the season and I couldn't be happier! I'm looking forward to taking it easy and spending more time at home over the winter months working on personal projects and being crafty! We had a great Thanksgiving with friends and family and I'm looking forward to seeing more family over the holidays. Not to mention meeting my new niece or nephew (it's a going to be a surprise) in the next week or two! I started holiday shopping today and got some great gifts! Local and handmade rule! Oh and I also got earlier this week an early Christmas present....yes my very first iPhone! I've never had internets on my phone before! Watch out world! This hipstamatic feature on the iPhone is addicting. See self portrait. Back From Tour and Local Show Sunday!

Hey all!
We are back from our tour adventures! There are no words to express what a great time we had and how generous and amazing the people we had the pleasure of working with were. We played several shows in German for the first time and it was amazing! Oh and to bike around Paris-what a treat! We love and miss Allo Darlin'. Touring with them rocked our world. Words can't say enough so here are some pictures of tour-more to come!
This Sunday night we rock our own local venue The Monkey House in Winooski, VT with a Welcome Home Smittens CD Release Party with our friends The Poison Control Center. We can not wait to rock out in our own state this weekend! See you there! xoxo

London Bells Are Ringing

Great show in London last night at The Luminaire with Antarctica Takes It and Allo Darlin'. It was a sold out show and the energy was fantastic with the audience. Afterwards we went to our dear friend Camila's place and hung out before heading to sleep. She is a great host as usual. Today we head to Sheffield for our next show! Cheers luvs!

Just wrapping up our second day of tour. I'm finally feeling like my cold is going away and my jet-lag. Glasgow, Scotland was so fun the first night despite my tiredness. Seeing our friends abroad and our friends who are touring as well from NYC was great. Tonight we played in Birmingham, England and tomorrow we head to London. Check out our tour schedule here. I know it's been a while since I updated. Life just flies by sometimes but I promise to start updating again more often. The Smittens had a great weekend playing at NYC Popfest. Saw friends from abroad and friends from NYC and friends from everywhere else. It was a fun time to say the least. Even witnessed Johnny Rotten get in a fight at he restaurant across the street from the club. That was hilarious to witness.

First off The Smittens are excited to return to the Rhythm & Brews Coffeehouse this Thursday- our last show there was on January 22nd, 2004, and prior to that was back in 2002 with My Favorite and the Alps! And The Winner Is....

Us! This year we threw our Oscar party at Bluebird Tavern. I think it was the best one yet! Two of my friends came for the night from Massachusetts which made it even more special. It was a private event so we had the large blue room with the Oscars projected and then the bar area as well. I think 60 people came over the course of the evening. Our friends dressed up and everyone looked amazing. Here are just a few of the pictures taken on my camera. Today in a moment of spontaneity I gave myself bangs. I seem to back and forth with bangs and no bangs. Usually I have some one else cut the initial bangs and then trim myself but I was feeling brave this time I guess. Last time I think I had them was two years ago maybe. I also had a bob then and my bangs were crooked and even shorter. Anyhow what do you think? Also here is a funny link speaking of bangs.

So Mary, Trena and I had a great ladies night. Got all fancied up and went to dinner at Trattoria Delia. Every part of our meal was amazing. The tiramisu was to die for. The wine was divine. Later we went to our friend's birthday dance party. That's were these pictures were taken. I wore my new BB Dakota skirt as you can see in the pics. The vest and pearl necklace were thrifted.

Hello Smittens! I'm interviewing you because your wonderful cover of the Just Joans 'What Do We Do Now' (from your seven inch split EP on Wee Pop!) made my Top 20 Songs of 2009 list. How does it feel to be in receipt of such an overwhelming accolade?

Well that was some great company to be in. And clearly we couldn't have done it without the genius song they wrote.

And how did that collaboration come about? Were you good friends with the Joans beforehand? Can we expect similar projects in the future? Maybe with Transmittens?

We wanted to cover one of their songs after we saw them play the first time in Glasgow. We were on the books to release a single on WeePOP records, and invited them to join us because we enjoy gimmicky symmetry and of course we wanted to hear what their cover of one of our songs would sound like, and, lucky for us, they were game. As far as future collaborations go, there's nothing currently on the books, but you never know.

Similarly, what are The Smittens favourite songs (or popshows or LPs) of 2009? You don't have to do twenty, I know that you're busy people.

The Littlest Smitten says her favorite pop show was seeing Gordon M. from Ballboy playing in the church at Indietracks.

The Charming Smitten says: The Middle Ones at London popfest, Suburban Kids in San Fran (the night after the SF popfest) or the POBPAH Valentines show in Burlington, VT.

The Greek one says: San Fransisco Popfest final Tullycraft show

The Lady Smitten says: I fell in love with Cats on Fire last summer at Cosy Den.

And the Dashing says: The Would-be-Goods at Twee as Fuck last February, Burning Hearts in Stockholm, Speedmarket Avenue at Indietracks, Just Joans at the Nottingham all-dayer in November. I've been addicted to all these bands' records this year.

Your performance at Indietracks last summer was one of the highlights of the year for us here at Baby Honey Towers. Any other favourite moments of 2009?

3 Smittens got married a week apart in 2009 (two of them to each other). It was really the year of doing everything we dared ourselves to do. Also finally touring Sweden--better known as the Magic Kingdom of Indiepop.

And what does 2010 hold for the band? New records? Are you coming back to the UK? Can we book you? We'll start stockpiling the Newcastle Brown.

Yes, yes, and yes please. Though Colin still hasn't gotten over the fact that they don't have Newcastle on tap in Newcastle. 2010 holds some time in the studio recording a new album, the release of our addition to the Tullycraft Covers compilation (put out by LA Tool & Die), the release of our latest album, The Coolest Thing About Love on vinyl, a cover of a Cars Can Be Blue song for the HHBTM 10 year anniversary compilation, and for sure, a UK and European Tour. We are also confirmed to play NYC popfest and Indietracks, and have been invited back to play Cosy Den as well.

How is Vermont? Is there much of an indiepop 'scene' going on in Burlington? Are you aware of the British band called Vermont? They were pretty good actually.

We love Vermont. As far as indie pop goes, we are currently sitting in a room with 80% of the indiepop people in this state (it would be 90% if Max was here). There is a big indie community here in Burlington, VT but it spans a variety of genres and media--artists, farmers, dancers, folk musicians, bakers, and more. It's an amazingly creative, conscious, and beautiful little place and we totally feed off that and hopefully give something back as well.

We're big fans of Wee Pop! and think that Camila is, like, totally rad, but can you tell her to stop making the packaging for the 3" CD-Rs so pretty? Sometimes it's heartbreaking to have to open them and spoil such beautiful design.

First off, Camila is the bees knees! You've seen her cd artwork; what you don't know is that she makes a mean veggie lasagna and is the best host in all of the UK! If you buy two of every release, you wouldn't have to worry about whether your only copy got ripped.

When I cack-handedly attempted to interview you and The Pocketbooks last time we met, you mentioned that you very much enjoyed discovering some particularly British delicacies such as Marmite and Newcastle Brown Ale. In the spirit of cultural exchange, are there any US or Vermont-based
foodstuffs us Brits should know about?

We have really good locally brewed beer here in VT. And great local cheese. and obviously there are those guys Ben and Jerry. You might want to check out spelt pretzels, fluffernutter sandwiches, half and half in your coffee, and when in New York, Dominican breakfasts of yellow rice, black beans, and eggs (with a side of fried sweet plantains). PS don't be fooled by the Canadians: Vermont maple syrup is the best. In fact, it's nearly sugaring season.

Tell us a secret.

We can be real bitches. If we're on stage and all wearing stripes, it's not actually a coincidence...

I've been a sick girl for the past few days despite having a gig in the middle of it which by the way was super fun! Thanks Cave Bees and Wolff! Today I left work early as I'm still fighting a nasty sore throat and stuffed noise. I was feeling kind of down as one is want to do when your sick and can't get anything done or have any fun but then The Smittens got confirmation tonight that we are opening for Mates of State on February 17th at Higher Ground in South Burlington, VT! Last night David and I had a date night. I wore my new BB Dakota navy blue skirt and UE pink tee shirt. Love them both! We went and saw three great local bands. Butterfly Star Power who's singer is only seven! Followed by our friend James's band James Kochalka Superstar and lastly on friend Missy Bly. It was great show and we were in bed before midnight!

Three years ago The Bobbin Sew Bar and Craft Lounge was born in Burlington. Co-owners Rachel Hooper and Gyllian Rae Svensson, both of Burlington, host weekly classes in mending, knitting, block printing and have coined the term “eco-sew” with their Friday afternoon classes designed to educate the community on reusing materials.
“About 67 million tons of fabric hit the landfills every year,” Hooper said. “We live in this disposable culture where we don’t value quality materials and we don’t value the labor that goes into making our clothing.”
This surplus of materials is what brought them to create The Bobbin. All sustainable sewing and crafting classes include materials. “A lot of our materials are recycled,” Svensson said. “Basically, we are here to give people a place to build a skill and recycle. It’s empowering for everyone involved.”
Many people come in intimidated by the sewing machines, but Hooper and Svensson said they are always on hand to show people that sewing can be fun and accessible. After taking a sewing class, machines can be rented by the hour.
“For some, it’s hard to pull the sewing machine out and make space,” Hooper said. “Here we have all the space and material you need to sew and create.” They offer birthday parties for children and parties for adults, too. The space and the guidance of Hooper and Svensson can be booked for an evening, or people can stop by to do some mending. Svensson said The Bobbin is a green business.
“We’re bringing sock darning back,” Svensson said with a chuckle. “As Americans we are going to need to reach a place where we get back to basics.”
Hooper said, “We embrace the Depression-era ethics of mending. Remember ‘a stitch in time saves nine?’”
Along with alterations and custom design work, The Bobbin also has clothing for sale made by local designers. The arts and crafts that line the walls and myriad vintage materials are also for sale.
Last week the two women held a class in crochet, creating models of the shape of the universe — coral-like structures called “hyperbolic pseudospheres” by some scientists.
While holding a red and blue piece of crochet work, Hooper explained that it was a hyperbolic pseudosphere.
“It’s next-wave geometry. It’s about negative curvature,” she said. “See how it folds in on itself and crenulates. That’s because of the properties of hyperbolic space. Scientists are using models like this to figure out how big the universe is.”

Vermont's The Smittens have turned American twee into an art. They're as soft as Ohio's Bears and as polished as Tullycraft. Three part harmonies utilizing the holy trinity of twee singing: The cute girl, the nerdy guy, and the dopey baritone. The effect is quite fetching. They call themselves "bubblegum," not twee, but this is just semantics.

The Coolest Thing About Love is the kind of album that grows on you. The sound quality may actually be too hi-fi for its own good. Fortunately, the songs themselves are incredibly infectious. I find myself singing "The Interstate" and "Baby Don't You Know" more often than I care to admit.

When the world gets a little too sharp at the edges, it's good to have a record like this in one's arsenal to make it a little softer for awhile.

I love to dance! I danced for many years regularly performing and collaborating with others. Over the last five years I've only performed here and there with dance. I've also taken dance classes and held a few dance parties to remind myself how happy dancing makes me and what a big part of my life it is. Hi there!
Yes I am alive. I have been neglecting this blog since we got back from tour but I have a good excuse. I was in the final months of my wedding planning and now I am in the final week. That's right it's this Saturday! Speaking of weddings we went to Dana (follow Smitten) and Katie's wedding this past weekend and it couldn't of been more beautiful and special. I am so happy for them. Pictures to come in a future post. David and I get married this Saturday and can't wait! I will do a big wedding update after as well as more regular post again. Thanks for your patience. Wish us luck on our big day.

Three Shows Down

Hi all,
Tour is going strong and great. Glasgow and Birmingham where great shows. Glasgow was an amazing turn out for a Monday and the line up was just fantastic. Our split with The Just Joans looks amazing! Today we head to London to play at the Wilmington Arms tonight. I am so excited.Below are pictures from Glasgow with the exception of the last one which is from last night in Birmingham. Tour Day One

David and I made it safe and sound to England today. We had time to kill before catching the train to Leeds where Max lives so we went and got a yummy English brunch. Afterwards we walked over to the British Library. I have been a fan of Alice In Wonderland for some time and to be able to see the original book there in the library amongst other great literary works was such a treat. I left with a big smile on my face.Then we caught the two hour train ride to Leeds and I took a much needed nap most of the way. It is so great to be here at Max's flat...Smittens united! We had band practice for a bit after getting a beer at a local pub and are now making a late dinner. More updates to come. Tomorrow is our first show in Newcastle.

Hi there Friends! The Smittens are making the final preparations for yet another amazing Summer Adventure (tour dates at the end of this message)! This year will see us overseas in The UK (with our good pals One Happy Island) and in Sweden, playing at two awesome festivals and a bunch of other awesome gigs...

We're also releasing a new split 7” single with Glaswegian pop geniuses The Just Joans on WeePOP! It’s gonna be a mega yow!

Today is a busy day for The Littlest Smitten. I am dancing in the parade at 5pm which is part of the Burlington International Waterfront Festival activities. I think it will be allot fun. We are second in the parade lineup. Come downtown to watch the parade travel down Main Street. Later tonight The Smittens are playing at Skinny Pancake. We expect to start between 9pm and 9:30. Fingers crossed it doesn't rain because we are planning to play outside this time on the patio! So come on down to eat some good food, drink some good drinks and see us rock out.

My Millie Girl

I met my lovely friend Laura years ago while working at a locally owned clothing store here in VT. They carried mostly all natural fiber clothing and most of our shoppers there were 30 years plus. I like to think that Laura and I added a touch of youth and fun to the store. When I was hired I had pink hair which now is so funny looking back as it was kind of an "earthy" style store if you know what I mean. Anyhow the owners were great and if I hadn't been hired I might not have met Laura and been friends all these years later even after she moved back to Massachusetts. Sometimes it's rare to find such special friendships and I feel truly blessed to have her in my life. She is inspiring, thoughtful, wise, fashionable and full of beauty.Laura works now at Modern Millie in Salem, MA and created the blog Millie Girl. In her on words,"Millie is inspiring creativity in fashionable living in Salem,MA and beyond. The Fall Movie (2006)

I posted the other night about watching Pushing Daisies and what a great show it is, was. I was reminded too that Lee Pace who is also on Pushing Daisies was in the movie The Fall. Back when it was in the theater and I went to The Fall I knew very little about it. Leaving the theater I was blown away by what a beautiful movie it was. If you haven't seen it please do so as soon as possible and I promise you won't be disappointed.

I knew Pushing Daisies was a good show but for some reason I never fully committed to it. I saw the first two episodes on tv and then lost track. In part it's because I rarely ever watch anything on tv these days when it's actually on air and end up later on just watching a show on the computer where I can watch episodes back to back. Well tonight David and I watched several episodes and of course I love it. How could you not love Chuck's style. So rather then post a bunch of pictures I thought I would post just one and lead you here for a great blog post by The Tell-Tale Blog about the show and Chuck's great style.

Hello All!
Last weekend The Smittens were very lucky to be a part of Bernie Fest 2009. What is Bernie Fest you might ask? Well Bernie is Dana's uncle and the whole family threw him a surprise 60th Birthday Party on Father's Day. It was such a treat being part of such a special family event. Family skits were performed, stories were told and testimonials we spoken of Uncle Bernie. The Smittens were asked to played a set and we even did a cover of one of Bernie's songs. Bernie joined us up on stage and sung along. It was a blast! I think though one of the biggest surprises for Uncle Bernie perhaps was legendary Richie Havens walking into the party to perform following The Smittens. It was definitely a first for us to announce Richie Havens during our set! What an amazing performer he is and Uncle Bernie couldn't of been more happier to see one of his idols play his surprise party! Afterwords we got to hear some of Bernie's own songs. The Smittens had a great time and want to thank Dana's family for asking us to play and be a part of such a special day. Below are a few pictures from the party.

I am pleased to announce the debut of The Smittens new video for "One Hundred Roses" off their HHBTM album The Coolest Thing About Love. This song has been ruling my world since I got the record last summer, with its perfectly Magnetic Fields-y chorus "It doesn't mean that I love you any less/It only means that I'm a mess".

Not only that, but we also have the debut of another video from The Coolest Thing..., "Magpies and Eccles Cake", which is a collection of live videos.

Here's what they have to say about it:

The two videos, both made by Rob Koier with "One Hundred Roses" filmed at the VCAM studio and incorporating a lot of David Zacharis’ artwork – drawings and felt dolls – and "Magpies and Eccles Cake" using footage filmed at our last local VT show. One looks like a candy confection and the other looks more like a 70’s rock film in slow motion. Interesting contrast, and different sides of the visual representation of the band. We can’t wait to share them with you!
